Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's selection chief the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.
There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.
"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."
Previous Setbacks
The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.
The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.
Alternative Arrangements
Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.
Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."
"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.
"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
