Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, targets the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Broader Implications
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the final years of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
